Twenty-Two years after the United Kingdom abandoned the centuries old £1 note in favour of the small gold coin, the Channel Islands are still issuing and using them.
It also comes as a complete surprise and amuses most people that such a small island as Guernsey, only 7 miles by 4 in size, should have its own banknotes. How quaint!
Interstingly, if you find a Guernsey note that begins with a 'Z' this means it's been reprinted due to an error with the printing machine, although this makes all notes worth more, the £1 Note goes from £1, to being worth about £20 to collectors!
On a random note, anyone who comes to Guernseys, always moans because they look at their "Notes" in their wallet and think they've got more then they have; All Guernsey people like myself however, that go to the rest of the UK, come back with the wieght of a small continent in their pockets from all the Pound Coins... how do people put up with them???
